TEAMAUTISM.ORG is a comprehensive endurance training program for runners and walkers to benefit local individuals and families affected by autism in the Oklahoma City area. TEAMAUTISM.ORG's goal is to increase funding to support the Edmond Family Center for Autism (EFCA) while promoting fitness and healthy lifestyles. This year TeamAutism.org is working hand in hand with the OFCA to help us lay the ground work for applying for our own 501 c(3) status. TeamAutism.org had five walkers/runners who committed to training for the Honolulu Marathon and raising $25,000 by December 2007. The Honolulu team raised $27,611 and has blown our target goal of $25K out of the water. Next year, we hope to have well over 200 people in Oklahoma joining us as team members of TeamAutism.org. We plan to participate in the Maui Marathon and 1/2 marathon and hope to raise over $500,000 to help families throughout the state. In 2009 we plan on taking team members to the Walt Disney World Marathon in January and back to Hawaii that fall. We hope to have even more participants with each race that follows. We are so excited about all the possibilities for positive changes that these dollars will make for families across the state. EDMOND FAMILY CENTER FOR AUTISM In a realization that more and more families were dealing with autism and that there was so much support needed, the Edmond Family Center for Autism was started. This group has been a beacon in the night to families who need help understanding research, finding low cost treatment options for their children and who sometimes just need a way to connect with others who deal with the same challenges they do. What are some of the challenges? • Between 80% and 90% of couples with autistic children divorce under the pressure • It is typically impossible for both parents of an autistic child to work – this is financially difficult for most families • Treatments needed are sometimes very expensive and not covered by insurance • Schools are not always equipped to help these young people who many times have normal to above average IQ. One upcoming event for EFCA is the start up of thier own comprehensive website that will have vital information for newly diagnosed families as well as for those who are years past the initial diagnosis. This is one of many exciting advancements that EFCA is working to bring to the families of Edmond and surrounding areas. Please consider helping us touch the lives of these families that EFCA serves through giving a tax-deductible donation or participating as a TeamAutism.org team member. |
